Your bird feeder is going to be the one place where dozens of animals will visit.  However, not all of the animals are going to be healthy.  In fact, lots of animals which visit your feeder will end up being sick.  Some animals get sick from time to time and there are going to be many birds which visit your feeder that are sick

However, a bird feeder does give you a great close up view of the animals that visit your feeder, especially the birds.  There are going to be times when you see one or two birds look unhealthy and sick and when you do, you can often be a little unsure as to what you should do.  Sometimes, people will call a vet and other times, they will try to treat the sic animal themselves.  However, is that always the right thing to do?

What You Should Do When You See A Sick Bird?

The best thing to do is to call a wildlife centre or call a vet.  You could attempt to treat the birds yourself but that is not always the right thing to do.  If you treat a sick bird when you don’t know what you’re doing, you could end up hurting the bird more.  What is more, it’s illegal at times to treat wild birds so protect both of yourself and call in a professional.

However, if you see a bird which is sick and it feeds at your feeder, you need to clean the feeder immediately.  Other animals can be infected with diseases with whatever the sick bird is dealing with so you do need to try to clean the feeder thoroughly.  It will be very important to do so and if you don’t, you could end up harming other birds so even if you suspect a bird is sick clean it.  It’s important to avoid spreading the disease if you clean your feeder often.

One of the best things you can do to protect other animals is to have a squirrel proof bird feeder.  If you can have a feeder which is squirrel proof, it does help to keep the infection and diseases down to a minimum.  Of course, there are lots of different animals which can come to your feeder which means that there are a lot of risks to a different level so you need to think about that when you are creating your bird feeder.

You do have to do whatever you can to avoid spreading infections around to other animals and if there are lots of different animals that visit your feeder, you need to stop the risk altogether.  It will help to protect other animals.  Though, if you aren’t sure whether a bird is sick, it’s always best to call in a professional and remove the feeder until you thoroughly clean it.

There are lots of different steps you can take to remove the threat of sick animals at your feeder.  However, it will be so important to do what you can to remove a diseased bird or birds from your bird feeder.
